Idea for a narrative (10 Jan)

In our lesson today, we worked more on ideas for narratives that could be used in a short film. We worked in groups of 4, each having our own personal idea, then chose to develop one of them. We focused on location, characters, narrative structure and themes. Our chosen narrative structure was ‘development of a single character’.

Synopsis:

The story follows an assassin talking through killing his target. It shows the killing, while a non-diegetic voiceover of the assassin explains the motives for the kill, as well as how it was done. As the assassin kills his victim, the scene quickly cuts to show the assassin (who was the voiceover) explaining what happened in a confession within an interrogation room.

Characters:

  • Assassin – nameless, although regular to society, we learn he’s a loving father
  • Lawyer – Alice Jenkins, innocent (allows the audience to feel sympathy)
  • Boss – nameless/faceless, unknown to audience and characters. Powerful.

Location:

  • Warehouse – Used for taking the job and planning the kill.  Dark and mysterious, uncomfortable for the audience to picture themselves in.
  • Lawyers office – Place of murder. Modern and bright, contrasts to brutal murder.
  • Police station – Interrogation room. Dull and dark, negative connotations.

Themes:

  • Crime
  • Violence
  • Morality
  • Justice

Binary Opposition:

  • Good vs. Bad
  • Crime vs. Justice
  • Right vs. Wrong

Additional information:

  • Motivations for kill – assassin kills victim because he needs the money for his terminally ill son.
